Diabetes Deteriorates Mental Function

Findings of a new study showed that diabetes worsens the mental function of affected individuals leading to an early-onset but permanent neurocognitive complications.

According to a study published in Neuropsychology, diabetes impairs higher cognitive function such as semantic speed, planning, organizing and paying attention.
The episodic and semantic memory, verbal fluency, reaction time and perceptual speed, however, are not affected by the condition.

There is no significant difference in the pattern of mental deterioration among young and old diabetics, indicating that the damage starts in the early stages of the disease and continues into later life.

Scientists claim that the cognitive disorder is not considerable in the majority of elderly diabetics; therefore, these individuals should not be concerned about the condition.
They, however, warn that uncontrolled blood sugar and casual management of the disease worsens progressive cognitive decline in such patients.
